Day 7 Regensburg

We sailed overnight through many locks...and arrived in Regensburg at 10am. After a leisurely breakfast we meet our tour guide at 1030 and walked through this lovely city.

Ravensburg is best known for it's Bavarian Sausage and Sauerkraut, once the home of Oskar Schindler and the current Pope Benedict XVI. The BMW factory is based here in this well preserved medieval city.

After our walk around the centre of the old part of the city....again lovely cobblestone roads and beautifully preserved buildings......we returned to the ship for yet again another great lunch. This time featuring the Bavarian sausage and sauerkraut.

The afternoon was left for free time.....Kevin went on a bike ride, Graeme slept and Ruth and Carol went shopping!!!!!!!

At this stage we feel compelled to describe the amazing lock system that links the Danube through the Maine Danube Canal to the Rhine River.
The canal was made and consists of a series of 'locks' that acts as steps to lift the ship to the top of the river system.....and then drop back down to the river system it is joining. A lock can be risen or dropped to a level of approximately 25 meters. In this way canals can link traffic (was built initially to allow trade to flow freely) across the country via it's river systems. This mode of transport was seen to be superior to road transport as the roads are narrow and winding (especially over high country).
